Norfolk Birding - October 2027

Norfolk has always been a top birding destination for birdwatchers, especially during spring and autumn migration, boasting a list of over 420 species. This autumn tour takes in some of the best birding & wildlife sites at this time of year.

Norfolk Birding - October 2027

The three day autumn tour will focus on the best reserves and sites during autumn. The tour starts in the vast expanse of The Wash, one of the most important habitats in the UK, supporting nearly half a million non-breeding wildfowl during the autumn/winter months.

The saltmarsh and mudflats at Frieston and Frampton are recognized as internationally important waders such as Oystercatcher, Eurasian Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit and Black-tailed Godwit, Red Knot, Dunlin and Common Redshank. Both of these reserves border the saltmarsh and mudflats of The Wash, allowing visitors to witness vast flocks of waders gathering on the reserve lagoons at high tide. In addition to the waders, other wildfowl such as Eurasian Wigeon, European Teal, Brent and Pink-footed geese. Raptors include Marsh Harriers, Short-eared Owls and there is also the chance of seeing Hen Harrier, Merlin and Peregrine.

Day two will focus on the at Cley and Salthouse Marshes. These famous areas can be a great place to see less common waders such as Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper. Songbirds at this time of year include Bearded Reedlings and scarcer birds can turn up such as Water Pipit. The coastal areas can be good at this time of year for Arctic and Great Skuas, Little Gulls and the occasional rarity. On the beach Snow Bunting, Shorelark and Lapland Bunting feed amongst the vegetation at the edge of the shingle, often only metres away. In the Holkham area a short drive away we will search for birds such as Firecrest and Yellow-browed Warblers.

Day three: Thornham Marshes and Holme. On the coast a relatively short drive away are two of Norfolks most famous locations for migrant birds. These areas can be great for migration with birds such as Redwings and Fieldfares arriving from the continent. Less common species are seen every year such as Barred Warbler, Wryneck and Red-backed Shrike. Offshore we will srearch for sea duck such as Long-tailed Duck, Common Scoter and Slavonian Grebe.
